Wind Mitigation: Document Features Before Estimating Savings
Learn how wind mitigation reports document home features and why insurance credits and savings depend on the insurer and the specific property.
Wind Mitigation inspections document construction features that an insurer can consider when evaluating applicable windstorm credits. The inspection records what can be supported by observations and documentation; it does not install protection or guarantee a premium reduction.
Document the home you have
Useful records may include roof permits, product information for opening protection and documentation of completed improvements. Tell the inspector what records are available and arrange access to relevant areas. If a feature cannot be verified, do not assume it will qualify because it appears in an advertisement or a seller's description.
Ask for a property-specific insurance comparison
Send the completed report to your insurance agent and ask which credits apply to your policy. Discuss the affected portion of the premium, current credits and the carrier's review process. A percentage quoted for another household is not a dependable estimate for yours, and credits should not be added together from an unsourced product table.
For inspections from April 1, 2026, Florida requires the revised OIR-B1-1802 form. Reports from inspections before that date may use the older form. A completed form can remain valid for up to five years if the structure has no material changes and the form has no inaccuracies. A new form edition alone does not automatically invalidate a qualifying older report.
Before paying for improvements, compare a contractor's written scope with the insurer's documentation needs. Consider the work's suitability and protection benefits as well as cost. Product selection and installation need to match the opening, building and applicable requirements; a general inspection is not an engineering design for the retrofit.
Keep the report and supporting records with your insurance documents. If the carrier requests clarification, send that specific request to the team.
